Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has come out hard against Israel since the beginning of the Gaza campaign with some of the harshest words of any leader to date. Today, he even threatened to freeze military cooperation between the two countries and suspend upcoming joint maneuvers.

.

Why is he so angry? He feels betrayed by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who met with him on December 22 in Ankara and assured him that Israel wouldn’t make a major military assault on Hamas even though rockets were raining down on Israel on a daily basis. Maybe Olmert meant what he said at the time because he certainly seemed passive enough to other Hamas provocations, but the situation changed drastically after he flew back home.

.

On December 24, over 60 missiles and mortar rounds hit Israel and on Christmas Day, 8 (some reports say 9) new, Iranian-made rockets with their factory markings still on them (local TV must not carry CSI) were found in southern Lebanon set-up, primed and aimed at the Israeli town of Nahariya. This was literally the straw that broke the camel’s back and pushed Israel to war on the 27th. Turkish PM Erdogan took this as a betrayal and has reacted accordingly.

.

Earlier today, he said Israel was ‘perpetrating actions that would lead to its destruction’ and ‘Allah will sooner or later punish those who transgress the rights of innocents.’

.

The second sentence is remarkable considering Turkey’s own history. Even now, it is in a violent struggle with Kurdish separatists, some of whom are based in northern Iraq, and Turkey hasn’t been shy about attacking over the border or even sending in troops to assault enemy bases. To say Israel can’t do the same thing they are doing simultaneously smacks of the strongest form of Muslim hypocrisy. Notice there aren’t any world-wide protests, demands or UN Security Council sessions to try to get Turkey to stop attacking the Kurds.

.

Then there is the Turkish mastery of the art of genocide. They managed to kill off between 1 and 1.5 million Armenians in WW I, 500,000 to 750,000 Assyrians during 1914-1920, and 350,000 to 500,000 Greeks during 1916-1924. Hitler was even inspired by what the Turks did and how little and ineffectively the world responded when slowly formulating what to do with the Jews.

.

Given this history, it is a bit rich of the Turks to be demanding that anyone stop trying to aggressively defend themselves when they have no problems with mass killings themselves. I guess old habits really do die hard. The Turks are used to getting what they want at the end of a gun, but in this case, the object of their ire is too far away, too strong and not afraid of them anyway. PM Erdogan can stew in his own juices. If he frustrated enough, he can go home and smack his wife around to make himself feel better. That is allowed in Turkish society too.
