Uh??? For ..years of my life (not gonna tell my age, im a woman icon_wink.gif ) I have never met a practising Zoroastrian.
If you mean the celebration of Novruz, it is indeed rooted into Zoroastrian religion, but nowadays we celebrate it without its religious meaning, its Spring holiday now.

When I was a student I worked as a tourist guide during summer holidays and would take foreign tourists to Surakhani,a place just outside Baku where there is a temple of fireworshippers bult by indian merchants, as a guest house, in the 18 or 19 century. We also have got some remainings from such temples of much older time in other regions of Azerbaijan. Most of them were destroyed with the rise of Islam on our land.

Well Azerbaycan used to be the prime zarthost empire, people do still practise it, but I dont think 90% is the correct number. And we still used the flame as our arms of coat and our symbol. We do honour this religion but I think in this case the encyclopedie is wrong on the statictics.

I do know on Novruz people go to the gassed-mountains and let the mountain go in flames to celebrate Novruz. Its really a breathtaking ceremony, you see the flames dancing arround the rocks of the mountain, its undescribable. But once you witness such a moment you understand why Azerbaycan means, land of the eternal flames.

But today Azerbaycan excists mostly out of partly-atheists, I have only seen about 10 real muslims in Sumgait. But most people do believe in something and they do consider themselfs as muslims from within. Personally I hope we Azeri dont get to real with religions. Because Azeri people are very realistic and smart and I hope we can keep this value.

Yes, I do jump over fire, but without religious meaning, rather as a tradition. icon_smile.gif
It's amazing how our people have kept some traditions of zoroastrianism over thousands of years despite of the spread of christianity and later muslim religions.

Yeah its really amazing how this ancient religion and tradition is preserved is, but I think some do it as a tradition and other for religion. I know my whole family in Baku does this for the real religious reasons and so do I. Also I think most people are aware that this comes from the ancient religion Zoroastrianism and that this is not just any tradition icon_smile.gif
