in other words, according to you, saying 'azeris and uzbeks both speak turkish' is like saying 'germans and ukranians both speak european'.

No, I thought what I wrote was simple enough but.. We all speak the same language, the alphabets are different becouse of the Russian rule.. And we are as you put it " Turkic" and according to most of the Turks Turan. So, while English and German may sound the same they are not dialects of the same language. In our case it is dialects of the same language.

Well your categorization is a little bit messy. if you know any Dutch around you, you 'd see that pronounciation is not related to any other.
On the other hand, Dutch is both affected by Nordic and Germanic languages ,but that is okay.

Swedish and Norwegian can deal, but a Swede and Dane can't. In order a Swede understand what a Dane say is to listen to his words carefully .Because , even more words are different in Swedish and Dane.

Kazakh, Tatar,Uzbek, Kyrgyz ,Nogai ,Turcomen,Azerbaidjani Turks ...etc are ALL TURKS with different dialects . Look , we can differ Turks into two ;

- Oghuz [ Turks, Azerbaidjani Turks, Uzbegs(oghuz-begs) , Turcomen, Uighurs ...etc]
- Kypchagh [Kyrgyz , Kazakh, Tatar , Cuwash , Pecheneg, Qaraqalpagh ...etc ]

Those two had different dialects differenciated in time because of some cultural interactions.
