Presidents of Armenia and Greece discussed bilateral relations

President of Armenia Robert Kocharian, who arrived to Athens on a state visit, and President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias held a face to face meeting, after which the negotiations were continued in a larger format. At the meeting were discussed issues related to a wide range of relations between the two states. The two sides spoke also about the international issues, in particular those related to the South Caucasus and the Balkans.

At the briefing, which took place after the conclusion of the talks, President Papoulias assessed them as “very important and successful.” He said that the opportunities for the further development of the already existing warm relations between Greece and Armenia exist in all areas. The bilateral economic relations, in particular, have great future, and impressive results can be achieved in the area of tourism.

The President of Greece assured that his country would continue to assist Armenia on its way toward the European Union. “Armenia, similar to Greece, has an intricate neighbor like Turkey, and I think that Armenia is the country that understands perfectly well the problems of the Greek-Turkish relations,” said President Papoulias.

Robert Kocharian expressed confidence that during the visit the necessary relations would be established with the new team of the Greek leaders, and the formed traditions would be maintained.

At the meeting with Prime Minister Kocta Karamanlis the agreement has been reached to foster the cooperation in the framework of the EU “New Neighborhood” policy in a number of areas, particularly those of tourism and food security.

The parties highlighted also the importance of invigorating activities of the intergovernmental commission and with this regard stressed the significance of the regular meeting of the commission scheduled for March, 2006.

President Kocharian and Prime Minister Karamanlis expressed also their satisfaction with the cooperation in the framework of international organizations and assured that the cooperation would be continued.

At the meeting of President Kocharian and President of the Greek Parliament Mrs. Anna Psarouda Benaki the two sides reached the agreement on fostering the Armenian-Greek interparliamentary relations.

Robert Kocharian met also with the leader of PASOK party Georgiu Papandreu and Mayor of Athens Mrs. Dora Bakoyiannis.

Tomorrow, President Robert Kocharian will continue his meetings in the capital of Greece.
