Azeris are not turk. Azeri culture is iranic ve caucasian rather than turkic.
Azeris's old language is pahlavi actually. Linguististics found that in azeri turkish there are alot of pahlavi words and they didn't have any doubt that azeris were iranian speaking people.
Name of Azerbaycan is also 2000 years old.
Turkish was exposed on azeris on the 10-11 centuries. When turks came to azerbaycam there were a big population of azeris. Where did they go?
Homam tabrizi, a poet, has written his poems in azeri pahlavi language in the 7-8 centuries.
Plus if you listen azeri turkish it has a iranian language accent. This also shows that azeris before the 10th century spoke azeri pahlavi.
There are also azeris who belong to Zoroastrian (zerdust) religion. This religion is actually an iranian religion- aryan. This shows that azeris are ancient people of iran. Before islam, the religion of azeris was Zoroastrian. They are not turkish.
Azeris celebrate newroz. This is the celebration of iranic people generally.
New,Nu = yeni
Roz,Roj=gün
Newroz= yenigün
These words belong to iranian languages. In turkish n and v letters doesn't even exist.
Genetic study which shows that azeris are not turkish.

azeris are not turkic and persian. They are a nation bythemselves.

tigris,
Azeris are mixture of Turkic, Iranian and Caucasian roots with the language belonging to Turkic group of languages.
QUOTE if you listen azeri turkish it has a iranian language accent. This also shows that azeris before the 10th century spoke azeri pahlavi.
Yes, and if you listen to Azeri spoken in Azerbaijan republic you can hear lots of Russian words. Obviously, the language has been influenced by Persian and Russian because Azeri were or still are part of them.
Sure, Azeris didnt come from somewhere, they have alway lived on the land where they live now, but Oghuz wave came later though there were other Turkic tribes and Turkic speaking peole before Oghuz tribes. Over the last thousand years the Turkic element became stronger than the others especially with the Azeri Turkic being spread all over the place. So, overall ethnically we may be closer to iranian groups but again it depends on regions of Azerbaijan, its very mozaic. Anyway today it doesnt make much difference because Azerbaijanis speak Azeri Turkic and politically closer to Turkey than Iran. iran's policy towards the language rights of iranian Azeris causes anger and disappointment in their brotherhood.
Novruz, btw, is celebrated in Central Asia Turkic speaking countries as well.

QUOTE(Azertos) We are the Caucasian Turks.
You are a joker. Are you sure you read the article above.
Azeris are definitely not turks.
You are 100 % azeri.
Azeris people are a nation bythemselves.
They are not turkish,persian,armenian.
You are just azeri.
Your country's name is azerbaycan.
Your ancient language is pahlavi
Historians and Geneticists say azeris are not turk.
Accept it. You were always in azerbaycan, you never came from turkic countries. Only around 3-4 % of azeris have some turkic gene. Others have no turkic gene.

Yeah thats true the ethnicity of Azeri doesnt match any of nearby nations, this has actually been proven, the Azeri are just a indepenant people. But ethnicity doesnt have anything to do with being a part of a nation. We consider ourselfs Azeri Turks cuz we have adopted the Turkish culture. We were never assimilated or forced to adopt their culture, we chosed to adopt because we could get along very well. When the Turks first came they respected our culture and our fire symbols, so its kinda like we were meant to be brothers all along. Also Turks are our brothers, they have always helped us even when it meant the bad for them, we can always relay on them and in reverse. So you see ethnicity doesnt as much as brotherhood. You can compare it with; like saying parents who have adopted children are not their parent just people who watch over them, thats not right now is it.

I agree for the most part of it(not all), we do look Caucasian,we have a lot of similarities with other Caucasian nations, our culture, dances..
but the thing is that we speak a Turkic language wich makes us bond with Turks, doesn't matter wich..we are bonded with Central Asian Turks, with Anatolian..so the language plays a great role. Turks from Turkey dont look Central Asian, but they are accepted as Turks..turks from west look european, from east Middle eastern... allmost every nation is mixed
but I truly believe that our ancestors were of Turkic origins. and as you know turks played a major role in our History, we cant just forget that because of some DNA samples that show a different result.
I agree on what Baku87 said.

The land of modern Azerbaijan has alway been motherland for many peoples of Caucasian, Iranian and Turkic origins. Some villages and regions are of persian, some of Caucasian, some of Turkic origin, so the ethnic picture is quite mozaic. Strabo, a historian, noticed in his work about Caicasian Albania that there were 26 tribes on this land speaking different languages. So, their descendants still live on this land. But modern Azeris speak Azeri Turkic because of the strong influence of Turkic tribes, especially after 10 century.
p.s. Diri, nice pic, just noticed.

That is what I have been saying all along... Ethnicity of MOST nations is very mixed. With elements of their neighbours - like inter-marriages into their community... Then the minority assimilates into the majority...
Azeris are basically made up of three elements; Turkic, Aryan and Caucasian...
But what we won't agree on is the border between East Kurdistan and South Azerbaycan... We need a referendum to show this - people voting to be part of East Kurdistan or South Azerbaycan... That should solve the problem... And I am tired of the endless haggle over Ūrmiye... (I bet it is majority Kurdish! )
Thank you for the compliment...
